Electric platforms change the repair before the first panel comes off: high voltage isolation, a structural battery pack under the floor, aluminum castings, and procedures that leave no room for improvising.

An electric vehicle is not a normal car with a different engine. The floor is a structural battery pack. Large parts of the body may be single piece aluminum castings. The energy stored under the passenger compartment is enough to be genuinely dangerous to anyone who treats it casually.

Colorado has a lot of these vehicles now, and the repair standard for them is still catching up in a lot of shops.

The pack is structure. Impact anywhere near it changes the inspection requirements.

Safety first, and that is not a slogan here

Before any repair work begins, the high voltage system gets isolated following the manufacturer's procedure for that platform, and the vehicle is confirmed de energised. Then it waits: most manufacturers specify a dwell time before anyone works near the pack, because capacitors hold charge after disconnection.

A damaged pack has additional requirements. Depending on the impact and the manufacturer, that can mean isolated storage away from the building, monitoring for a defined period, and specific handling rules. Thermal events in damaged lithium packs are rare and extremely serious, and the procedures exist because of the rare case.

Do not charge the vehicle. Do not assume it is fine because it drives. If you smell something sharp and chemical, see smoke or vapor, or hear popping or hissing from underneath, get away from the vehicle and call emergency services. || Then call us and we will handle the tow and the intake.

The pack is structure

On most current EV platforms the battery enclosure is part of the load path. It stiffens the floor and contributes to side impact protection. That means an impact to the rocker or underbody is not just a panel question, and it means jacking and lifting points are specified and non negotiable.

It also means inspection requirements after an impact are defined by the manufacturer, frequently by severity and location rather than by whether anything looks damaged. We follow those, and if the procedure calls for pack removal to inspect, that's what happens.

Aluminum, castings and adhesives

Aluminum behaves differently from steel. It work hardens faster, it does not spring back the same way, and it cannot be repaired with the same heat. Aluminum work also has to be isolated from steel work: aluminum dust in contact with steel particles causes galvanic corrosion, so the tooling, the dust extraction and ideally the work area are kept separate.

Large single piece castings raise the stakes further. They are not sectionable the way a stamped rail is. When a casting is damaged, the manufacturer's procedure decides whether it gets replaced, and on some platforms that decision drives a vehicle toward total loss faster than an equivalent steel car would go.

Joining on these platforms leans on structural adhesive and self piercing rivets, applied in a specified sequence with specified cure conditions. That is a materials process, not a welding process, and treating it like welding produces a repair that fails quietly.

Refinishing around a battery

A normal paint bake cycle puts the whole vehicle at a temperature the pack manufacturer may not permit. Depending on platform and procedure, that means limited bake temperatures, longer cure times at lower heat, or removing the pack. It is one of the quieter ways an EV repair takes longer than the equivalent combustion car.

Range and charging afterward

A repaired EV should charge and hold range the way it did before. If it doesn't, something in the pack, the cooling system or the charging hardware needs looking at. We verify the high voltage system and run the manufacturer's diagnostics before the vehicle is released, and we tell you what the results said.

The bottom line

Ask any shop how they isolate high voltage, where they store a vehicle with pack impact, and how they keep aluminum work separate from steel. If those questions produce vague answers, that is your answer.

Can you repair my Tesla?

Is my EV safe to drive after an accident?

Do not assume so. Damage near the pack, underbody impact, or any warning about the high voltage system means the vehicle should be transported rather than driven.

If you see smoke or vapor, smell something sharp and chemical, or hear popping from underneath, get clear of the vehicle and call emergency services.

Why do EV repairs take longer?

Isolation and dwell time before work starts, additional inspection requirements around the pack, adhesive cure schedules, and limited bake temperatures during refinishing.

Parts availability on some platforms adds to it.

Will my battery need replacing after a collision?

Usually not. Packs are protected and most impacts do not reach them. When an impact does involve the enclosure, the manufacturer's procedure decides what inspection or replacement is required, and that decision is not made by eye.

Does a repair affect my EV's range?

It should not. We verify the high voltage system and run manufacturer diagnostics before release, and we give you the results. If range or charging behaviour changed, that is something to investigate rather than accept.
