ADAS Calibration

Your car watches the road through a camera behind the windshield and radar behind the bumper. Move either one, even slightly, and it is looking at the wrong place. Calibration is how it gets pointed back.

Static calibration puts a target at a distance and height the manufacturer specifies, on a level floor, with the vehicle at correct ride height.

ADAS stands for advanced driver assistance systems. In plain terms: automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, and the camera that reads speed limit signs.

All of it depends on sensors knowing exactly where they are pointed. A forward camera aimed a fraction of a degree high is looking further down the road than it thinks. At seventy miles an hour on I-25, a fraction of a degree is a lot of pavement.

A scan is not a calibration

This confuses almost everybody, including some shops.

A scan reads the modules and reports fault codes. It tells you whether a system is complaining. It does not aim anything. A camera can be physically pointed at the wrong part of the road and report no faults at all, because from the module's point of view everything is working: it sees an image, it processes it, no error.

Calibration is the physical and electronic procedure that establishes where the sensor is actually pointed and teaches the module to trust it. Different job, different equipment, different documentation.

Watch out for

An estimate that includes a scan but no calibration on a vehicle that had its windshield, bumper, mirror, suspension or alignment touched. If a shop tells you the system "self calibrates while you drive," ask them to show you where the manufacturer says that for your specific vehicle. Sometimes it's true. Frequently it isn't.

Static, dynamic, or both

Static calibration happens in the shop. The vehicle sits on a level floor at correct ride height with a full tank consideration and correct tire pressures, and a target board is placed at a distance, height and lateral offset the manufacturer specifies down to the millimeter. The module then learns its reference.

Dynamic calibration happens on the road. The vehicle is driven at a specified speed, on a road with clear lane markings, for a specified distance, while the module calibrates against what it sees. Weather and traffic both matter, which is why a February storm can push a calibration into the following day.

Plenty of vehicles require both, in a specific order. We follow whatever the procedure for that VIN says, and we don't substitute one for the other because it's faster.

When your vehicle needs calibration

IfThe windshield was replaced
The forward camera comes off the old glass and goes onto new glass with a slightly different bracket position and optical properties. Calibration is required on essentially every vehicle with a windshield camera. See auto glass.
IfThe front bumper was removed or replaced
Front radar and parking sonar mount to it or behind it. Removing the cover disturbs the aim even if the radar itself was never unbolted.
IfA mirror or quarter panel was replaced
Blind spot and side view camera modules live there. Same logic.
IfThe alignment or ride height changed
Every forward facing sensor is referenced to the thrust line and to ride height. Change either and the reference moved. This catches people out after suspension work that had nothing to do with a collision.
IfStructural repair moved a mounting point
Calibration is required, and it happens after structural repair and alignment, never before.

Order of operations matters

Calibration is close to the last thing that happens. Structure first, then panels, then refinishing, then alignment, then calibration, then the post repair scan and road test. Calibrating before the alignment is finished produces a valid looking report for a car that is about to change its own reference.

What you should receive

A calibration document that names the vehicle, the systems calibrated, the procedure type, and the result. Keep it. If the vehicle is ever in another accident, or you sell it, or a dealer questions the repair, that page answers the question.

The bottom line

Calibration is not an add on and it is not optional on vehicles that require it. It is the step that decides whether the safety system you paid for at the dealership still works the way it did the day before the accident.

How do I know if my car has ADAS?

If it has adaptive cruise control, lane keeping or lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, parking sensors, or a 360 degree camera, it has ADAS.

Most vehicles built in the last decade have at least some of it, including trim levels people assume are basic.

Can the dealership do this instead?

Many dealers can, and for some vehicles that is the right call. What matters is that the calibration follows the manufacturer's procedure for your VIN and that you get documentation.

We handle calibration in house where the procedure and equipment allow it and route the work to the right place where it does not. Either way it happens before you get the car back.

My warning lights are off, so the system must be fine, right?

Not necessarily. A miscalibrated camera can be pointed at the wrong part of the road and still report no fault, because the module is receiving a valid image and processing it normally.

Absence of a warning light is not evidence of correct aim.

How long does calibration take?

A single static calibration on a cooperative vehicle is not a long job. A vehicle needing several systems, or a dynamic calibration that has to wait for clear lane markings and dry pavement, takes longer. Winter weather can push a dynamic drive to the next day.
